Ghana Mourns the Loss of Legendary Gospel Musician
Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has sadly passed away, sending shockwaves through the gospel music fraternity and the nation at large. The respected singer, songwriter, and choir leader was widely celebrated for his immense contribution to gospel music in Ghana over several decades.
Yaw Sarpong, founder and leader of the renowned gospel group Asomafo, was a towering figure in Akan gospel music. His songs were not just melodies but deep spiritual messages that strengthened faith, encouraged worship, and inspired generations of Christians across Ghana and beyond.
Known for classics such as Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa, Yaw Sarpong’s music became a permanent feature in churches, prayer meetings, and Christian gatherings nationwide. His unique ability to blend traditional rhythms with powerful Christian messages set him apart as one of the greatest gospel composers Ghana has ever produced.

In recognition of his outstanding impact, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, celebrating his lifelong dedication to gospel ministry and music excellence.
